There have been plenty of Minesweeper clones in the past. Here are our top picks for this very special genre...
Hormuz Minesweeper
This site hosts a browser-based game called Hormuz Minesweeper - a classic Minesweeper clone with a nautical twist, set on a map of the Strait of Hormuz. It's essentially a lightweight, themed puzzle game rather than anything informational or news-related about the region.
The board is laid over a nautical map of the strait, and mines only spawn on water tiles (a nod to the real-world strait being a major shipping lane).
Fun nonetheless. And a little political of course. :)

Minesweeper Pro
MinesweeperPro is a live, multiplayer take on Minesweeper where you compete online against other players in real time.
Up to 3 players share the same board and race to clear it, with new matches auto-created as needed.
So unlike the single-player Hormuz variant, this one's built around competitive, real-time multiplayer scoring rather than a themed solo puzzle.

Dragonsweeper
Dragonsweeper (by Daniel Benmergui, on itch.io) is a roguelike puzzle game built on top of Minesweeper's core mechanics, but with monsters, loot, and RPG-style progression layered in.
Instead of plain numbers/mines, cells contain monsters of varying strength; you have HP and gain XP/level up as you play, so numbers indicate threat level rather than just mine count - it's described as "a minesweeper game that requires observation," with the developer pointing players to an in-game bestiary ("monsternomicon") to learn monster behavior.
In short: it's a beloved, replayable "Minesweeper meets roguelike RPG" indie game rather than a straightforward Minesweeper clone.
